Fair equality of opportunity
Fair equality of opportunity is the principle that people with the same talent and effort should have the same chances in life whatever their background.
Summary
- It comes from the philosopher John Rawls.
- Norman Daniels applied it to health. He argued that illness narrows what a person can do, so a fair society owes its members healthcare.
- It supports a health service open to all, and action on the causes of ill health that people do not choose.
