Reflective practice

Reflective practice is the habit of looking back on an experience, working out what went well or badly and why, and changing what you do next.

Summary

  • Doctors must show evidence of it at their appraisal each year.
  • Medical students keep written reflections in a portfolio.
  • Models such as the Gibbs cycle give it a structure.
  • Written reflections should leave out details that identify a patient.

Interview questions

  • Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you learn from it?
  • Why do doctors need to reflect?
  • How do you respond to criticism?
