Patient empowerment
Patient empowerment is giving patients the knowledge and confidence to manage their own health and share in decisions about their care.
Summary
- Patients in England can see their GP record and test results through the NHS App.
- Education programmes teach people with long term conditions, such as diabetes, to manage them day to day.
- It supports autonomy, because a choice needs information to be real.
- Some patients prefer the doctor to decide, and that preference deserves respect too.
Interview questions
- How can a doctor help a patient with diabetes to manage their own condition?
- A patient arrives with pages of research from the internet. How do you respond?
- Should patients be able to see everything written in their medical record?
