Enhanced DBS check
Disclosure and Barring Service
An enhanced DBS check is a criminal record check that adds information held by police forces to the standard check. Many medical schools ask for one as a condition of an offer.
Summary
- The Disclosure and Barring Service issues criminal record checks at four levels: basic, standard, enhanced, and enhanced with barred lists.
- An enhanced check contains the same Police National Computer information as the standard check and adds a check of information held by police forces.
- An individual cannot apply for an enhanced check for themselves. A recruiting organisation or registered body must request it.
- Queen Mary University of London makes occupational health clearance a condition of its offer, and says DBS clearance is needed before a student can start the course.
- Manchester says it cannot allow early clinical placements or progress without a cleared DBS check.
- The DBS cannot access criminal records held overseas. For applicants who have lived abroad, Queen Mary asks for an overseas police check or certificate of good conduct before the course starts.
