Professionalism

Professionalism is the standard of behaviour, competence and honesty the public can expect from a doctor.

Updated 12 October 2026 (1 minute read)

Summary

  • In the UK the standards are set out in Good Medical Practice, the regulator's guidance for doctors.
  • They apply outside work as well, including on social media.
  • They include keeping knowledge up to date, working within the limits of competence and raising concerns about patient safety.
  • A doctor who falls seriously short can lose the right to practise.

Interview questions
