Student selected components
SSCs
Student selected components, or SSCs, are blocks in a UK medical degree in which students choose what to study.
Summary
- Glasgow runs them as blocks of five weeks, chosen from a wide menu that includes research projects, deeper study of core topics, and subjects such as humanities and languages.
- Glasgow's blocks fall in years 2, 3 and 4 of the course.
- Newcastle offers two four week choice blocks, one in Year 3 and one in Year 4.
- The shape differs by school. Newcastle's eight week elective comes after Year 4 and is separate from its choice blocks.
