Integrated vs traditional course
An integrated course mixes science and clinical contact from early on. A traditional course teaches the underlying science first and clinical medicine later, in separate preclinical and clinical years.
Summary
- NHS Health Careers names three teaching styles: problem based learning, traditional teaching and an integrated style.
- The same page says prospectuses show which style dominates at each school.
- At Cambridge, the first three years focus on core preclinical sciences, which is the traditional split in practice.
- In Cambridge's last three years, students spend most of their time learning in hospitals and GP surgeries.
- Keele describes its course as highly integrated, and its placements begin in year 1, so patient contact starts at the beginning of the course.
