Patient centred care

Patient centred care builds decisions around the patient's own needs, values and preferences.

Updated 12 October 2026 (1 minute read)

Summary

  • The patient is treated as a partner in their care.
  • Shared decision making is its main tool. The doctor brings the evidence and the patient brings what matters to them.
  • It replaced the older paternalist model, in which the doctor decided what was best.
  • It depends on listening, clear explanation and enough time.

Interview questions

  • What does patient centred care mean to you?
  • A patient chooses a treatment that you think is the worse option. What do you do?
  • How is it different from giving patients whatever they ask for?
