Work experience
Medical schools use work experience, or relevant experience, to mean time spent in a caring, service or healthcare setting that you reflect on afterwards, whether it is paid or unpaid.
Summary
- The Medical Schools Council groups caring or service roles and observing healthcare as work experience, and observing healthcare can be done in person or online.
- Both paid and unpaid roles are valid, and retail, hospitality and community volunteering are listed as roles that can count.
- Where in person experience is hard to arrange, the Council points to virtual options, including Brighton and Sussex Medical School's virtual work experience and Observe GP.
- The Council says the focus is on what you learn and how you reflect on it, rather than the setting.
