Gateway year
A gateway year is a first year at the start of a medical degree, for students from widening participation backgrounds, that leads into the rest of the course.
Summary
- At Leeds, the gateway year is the first stage of the medical degree pathway.
- The Leeds course is specifically designed for students from widening participation backgrounds and is open only to UK applicants.
- On successful completion, students progress automatically into Year 1 of the MBChB Medicine and Surgery degree.
- Other universities run the same kind of route under a different name. Leicester calls its course Medicine with a Foundation Year, and its UCAS code line reads Medicine with a Gateway Year. See the Foundation year page.
