Summary

  • A team might include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and social workers.
  • Cancer treatment plans in the NHS are agreed at MDT meetings.
  • Each member brings knowledge the others lack, which cuts the risk of something being missed.
  • The team works well only if every member can speak up, whatever their seniority.

In practice

  • At the Leeds specialist neuro oncology service, the team meets on a Wednesday morning to discuss and plan each patient's treatment.
  • Its members include oncologists, neurosurgeons, histopathologists, neuroradiologists, specialist nurses, research nurses and MDT coordinators.

Interview questions

  • What is an MDT, and why does the NHS use them?
  • What makes a team work well?
  • You disagree with a decision made by a senior member of your team. What do you do?
