Threshold of viability

The threshold of viability is the earliest point in pregnancy at which a baby can survive outside the womb with intensive care.

Updated 12 October 2026 (1 minute read)

Summary

  • UK guidance from 2019 allows active treatment to be considered from 22 weeks.
  • The decision depends on the baby's individual risk and is made with the parents.
  • Babies born this early who survive have a raised risk of lasting disability.
  • It is separate from the 24 week limit in abortion law.
